My Question Is

What do I consider when I choose a molding process?

Typically, the most significant characteristics to consider are quantity requirements, appearance requirements, intrinsic value and size.  Rotational molding and vacuum forming are processes that have been the most viable for large, hollow parts that serve emerging markets.  Frequently, new designs in these emerging markets follow a series of design modifications.   Rotational molding and Vacuum forming offer the most diverse solutions for large, hollow parts.  Intrinsic value and quantity are also significant considerations.   The relative labor intensity of both these processes tend to favor high value low volume parts.  Products in growing and emerging markets are also excellent candidates for Rotational and Vacuum forming.  These processes allow rapid entry into the marketplace, with relatively modest capital commitment.  Al-Cast Mold and Pattern Company can assist you in the evaluation of your  options in the choice of a process.

What is the Typical Lead Time for tooling for Rotational Molding?

Lead times vary considerably based on the complexity of the part.  Among the elements defining time requirements are chosen process, number and complexity of inserts and removable features, contour of parting lines, graphics, surface treatment and engravings.  Typically, design, scheduling, and preliminary activity requires 1 to 2 weeks.  Pattern development and review 3 to 5 weeks.   Set-up and Casting 2 to 4 weeks. Mold finishing, framing and Q.C. requires 4 to 6 weeks.  Successful preliminary design efforts have the most significant impact on the production lead time.  Many facets of the tooling process require precedent activity.   Al-Cast Mold and Pattern is prepared and eager to assist you in the planning and execution of your project.
